A New Chapter for Local First
For more than two decades, Local First has been dedicated to celebrating and supporting locally owned businesses across Michigan. Thanks to members like you, we've built a vibrant community that believes local businesses are essential to thriving neighborhoods and a stronger economy.
As our work has grown, so has our vision.
Today, we're excited to share how Local First is evolving as part of the broader People First Economy movement.

What’s Changing?
Local First isn't going away. In fact, we're making it even more accessible.
Beginning this fall:
Local First recognition will remain free. Businesses that want to be recognized as Local First can continue to be listed in our directory at no cost.
We're creating one connected community. The new People First Economy Network will become our central hub for connecting, sharing resources, discovering events, and building relationships across Michigan.
A new Community Investor membership model will launch this fall. This will be an opportunity for businesses, organizations, and individuals to invest in the broader People First Economy ecosystem. 80% of every Community Investor donation will be reinvested directly into our communities through grants and no-interest loans that help local diverse-owned and purpose-driven businesses grow. The remaining 20% sustains our statewide programming, advocacy, operations, and network-building efforts.
Current Members
If you're currently a Local First member, there's nothing you need to do today.
In the coming weeks, you'll receive your annual membership renewal with more information about our new membership model and instructions for accessing our new online community.
As part of this transition, we'll retire our previous online member portal and move everyone to the new People First Economy Network, making it easier to stay connected through one shared platform.
