How do we fix the damn roads with a persistent 3.9 billion funding gap each year? Or properly resource our public schools with a 4.5 billion funding gap each year? The answer is pretty unsexy but important: having a fair tax system in place!
How does this impact Michigan small businesses?
- Right now Michigan has many loopholes for large corporations that contribute to our big funding gaps for basic essentials like roads, schools, and public transit. Tax dodging is one of the big workarounds monopolies have that adds stress to squelch competition and small, local business resilience.
- One realistic step we can take in Michigan to start chipping away at these loopholes is by ending the tax loophole referred to as “Dark Stores”. Right now big box stores get out of paying property taxes with a loophole secured in by the Michigan Tax Tribunal. This change in taxation is costing cities and townships millions in lost revenue.
- Closing this loophole will not increase taxes for small businesses, but will improve the overall health and resourcing of communities, which will result in better infrastructure for small business growth and resilience in Michigan.
